Crooked teeth and a misaligned bite can result in a number of cosmetic and functional problems. If the teeth and jaw do not align, patients may experience discomfort, have difficulty keeping the teeth clean and healthy, and suffer from chronic jaw pain. While some patients may require braces to bring the teeth into alignment, others may be good candidates for Invisalign®. At Dr. John Van’s Mountain View dental practice, patients can undergo cosmetic dentistry treatment to enhance the beauty of the smile and correct alignment problems with Invisalign®. Invisalign® uses clear, plastic aligners to shift the teeth into their ideal positions, providing patients with a level of comfort, convenience, and discreetness that they just can’t get from traditional braces. To find out if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®, contact our Mountain View, CA practice today.
Invisalign® offers orthodontic patients a number of benefits that are not provided by traditional braces, so most patients are eager to find out if this is a viable treatment option for them. Fortunately, many patients who are in need of orthodontic treatment are ideal candidates for Invisalign®.
There are three primary factors that should be considered when determining if Invisalign® is right for a patient. These include the type and severity of tooth misalignment, the age of the patient, and how committed the patient is to treatment.
- Types/severity of problems: This is probably the most important factor that goes into determining Invisalign® candidacy. Invisalign® can address most of the alignment issues that are corrected with traditional orthodontic treatment. This includes an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, as well as crooked teeth, gapped teeth, or overcrowded teeth. However, patients should be aware that if the tooth or jaw misalignment is severe, Invisalign® may not be an appropriate treatment. Invisalign® is best suited for minor to moderate levels of misalignment.
- Age of patient: Invisalign® is a great treatment option for adults who do not wish to undergo traditional orthodontic treatment, and mature teenagers who are looking for a more discreet treatment option than braces. However, Invisalign® aligners are removable and, therefore, there is a certain maturity level that must be reached for a patient to be considered a good candidate for treatment. In addition, for treatment to be a success, the teeth should no longer be growing and changing. For both of these reasons, young children and preteens are not good Invisalign® candidates.
- Commitment to treatment: As mentioned above, one of the unique features of Invisalign® is that the aligners are removable. This makes it much more convenient to eat, drink, and care for the teeth, another advantage over braces. However, in order for treatment to be effective, patients will need to wear the aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day.
Patients who feel that they meet the above qualifications should consult Dr. Van to discuss Invisalign® treatment. A consultation with Dr. Van is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®.
